Neighbor Bakehouse is a bustling bakery nestled in San Francisco’s Dogpatch neighborhood, known for its fresh breads and inventive takes on pastries. Situated just a short walk from UCSF Mission Bay, it naturally attracts locals looking for a quality breakfast or a quick grab-and-go treat before heading to work or appointments nearby.

The atmosphere leans toward the practical and efficient, with a line often forming, especially on weekend mornings. Early visitors benefit from the relatively quiet window of just after opening, although arrival right at 8 am may lead to a short wait due to occasional delays in opening time. Inside, the air carries a persistent, inviting scent of freshly baked bread that sets the tone for a straightforward but satisfying visit.

Neighbor Bakehouse doesn’t aim for upscale or trendy vibes but embraces the neighborhood bakehouse feel, with a focus on well-executed, layered pastries and a diverse bread selection. Among the more talked-about items are their croissants—like the ube, pistachio blackberry, and strawberry matcha varieties—that combine classic French technique with bold, sometimes unexpected, flavors. The ginger pull-apart bread stands out as a textured, aromatic choice, balancing ginger’s bite without overwhelming the palate.

This bakery also offers savory options like the mushroom tart and a char siu croissant sandwich, which reflect a local curiosity for fusion and comforting, hearty bites suitable for breakfast or lunch. While the interior is compact, it supports efficient service, and friendly staff typically keep the line moving even as the bakery fills up with people picking up bread to take home or snacks to enjoy on the go.

For visitors and locals alike, Neighbor Bakehouse works best as a morning or early afternoon stop—grab your pastry and coffee to eat by the waterfront nearby or on a stroll through Dogpatch’s streets. The combination of traditional and inventive pastries makes it appealing both to those who prize classic bakery treats and to the adventurous seeking new flavor spins on familiar items.

We stopped by Neighbor Bakehouse on a Sunday at 8 am. There was plenty of street parking available. As we were walking to get in line (3 parties in front of us), 2 employees rudely pushed past us on the sidewalk. It was clear they were late as the bakery was supposed to open at 8 am but did not open until 8:15 am. We got the char siu croissant, ube croissant, pistachio blackberry croissant, and ginger pull apart. The char sui croissant is more like a Danish but a good alternative for people who like savory pastries. The ube croissant was ok - although the interior was pretty, I thought the ube flavor was lacking. The pistachio blackberry croissant has a nice tartness from the blackberry filling. The ginger pull apart was very unique and delicious - I really like ginger flavored things so I enjoyed it (this is more like real ginger flavor and not gingerbread). I would get all the pastries again except the ube croissant. Overall, I enjoyed the pastries but I think B Patisserie and Arsicault are still my favorite bakeries.

We came here on a weekend afternoon. There was still plenty of bread inside! The server is friendly! Once you walk in, you will smell the sweetness of the bread and it is amazing. I got the ginger pull apart, the raspberry pistachios croissant, mushroom tart and the cream. They are all unique and good! Recommended!

Love Neighbor Bakehouse. The Ginger pull apart is amazing. It’s not too strong (Ginger-wise), and the layers of flaky chunks are perfection. If you haven’t tried their sausage roll, definitely give it a go, it is *delicious.* The first time I tried it I was honestly in a state of awe- I didn’t know which flavors were coming from where, or how it was so good. It’s super rich, not something I can eat very often, definitely a treat. Their breads are also excellent. Well baked, good craftsmanship. They also make some unique pastries, one with pork belly I think, which is also very rich. Pork belly on top of a croissant! I haven’t tried their curry pastry yet but it’s on my list. They are also a company who contributes to the community - I believe they either donate leftover baked goods to a local charitable organization/nonprofit and or make extra for that organization. Companies who take the extra steps to donate leftovers always win extra points in my book. My guess is that it would be easier for them to simply throw things away, but they package things up and send them to other people who will enjoy them.

I did hear about the bakery from people and decided to go. And indeed it was worth it. I went at 11:30. There was a small queue. I ordered strawberry matcha croissant and ginger pull apart (veg). Both of them were good. It was crispy and flavourful. They have various bread options. Must try

Bring on the seeds!!! The pumpkin seeds pop on this delicious bread. Why no pictures of the country bread, it was eaten too quickly!!! Right??? This is the perfect neighborhood Bakehouse and if you are at UCSF Mission Bay for a procedure or the children’s hospital, this is a 6 minute walk and well worth the effort. Theo shared a morning bun with the family who enjoyed it. The coffee was equally hitting!

Neighbor Bakehouse is outstanding. Their pistachio blackberry croissant is hands down one of the best ones I’ve ever had-perfectly flaky, rich pistachio flavor, and just the right touch of blackberry for balance. Everything tastes fresh and thoughtfully made. Easily a must-visit bakery in SF.

Hard to find parking but the pastries are incredible!!! Big fan of the spicy potato burek, pistachio blackberry croissant (a bit sweet but still amazing), and their pull apart savoury bread. Service is always pretty quick considering there’s a line every time I’ve been.

Incredible coffee. Both the regular cappuccino and the pandan latte were excellent. Pastry dough is super flaky and delicious. The fillings are a hit or a miss. Morning bun is more of a cinnamon roll. Absolutely no Parking and takes forever to find a spot. No place to sit inside and the outside tables are not covered.
